  82. 1a.  About this newsgroup.

  84.    This newsgroup is dedicated to discussion of the fictional world of
  85. Pern as described in the various novels and short stories by Anne
  86. McCaffrey.  Related topics include Ms. McCaffrey's other works, and
  87. several of the on-line 'virtual realities' depicting Pern (see below).

  89. 1b.  Introduction to Pern
  90.  
  91.    Pern is the third planet of the Rukbat system in the Sagittarius
  92. sector.  It is a Colony world which has lost contact with 'Mother
  93. Earth' due to periodic attacks from an organism called 'thread' which
  94. devours all organic material it comes into contact with.  To counter
  95. Thread, the Pernese - back when they still had the skills - modified
  96. an indigenous life-form to create Dragons - so named for the mythical
  97. beasts they resemble.
  98.    'Modern day' Pern has lost many of the skills originally brought
  99. with the colonists and can probably be best described as a 'pre-
  100. industrial' society.  Toward the end of the series, some of the
  101. original colonists' technology is rediscovered.
  102.    Alternatively, Pern is the home of Dragons, their riders, and
  103. various other people as depicted in Anne McCaffrey's _Dragonriders of
  104. Pern_ series and related books.

  106. 1c.  Appropriate subject matter
  107.  
  108.    As stated above, this group is primarily for the discussion of the
  109. world of Pern.  A major component of this discussion revolves around
  110. the various multi-user programs that have been set up attempting to
  111. simulate Pern.  The most often-discussed is 'PernMUSH', although there
  112. are several others in existance.  Articles about PernMUSH or the other
  113. Pern-related simulations should have 'PernMUSH' or 'MUSH' or something
  114. similar in the subject line so that those who are not interested can filter
  115. them out via KILLfile.
  116.    Note, however, that questions pertaining to the mechanics of MU*s
  117. (seeking clients, code questions, etc.) are better asked in the
  118. rec.games.mud.* heirarchy rather than here.
  119.    At times, the traffic about PernMUSH seems to dominate this
  120. newsgroup.  Generally, complaining about it is counterproductive and a
  121. good way to spark a flame-war.  If you, the reader, wish to discuss
  122. something that is not presently being addressed in the group, by all
  123. means start the discussion yourself.

  179. The rules are that my characters may be referred to but not used.  BUT
  180. there can be no adventure/stories set on Pern at all!!!!!  That's
  181. infringing on my copyright and can bear heavy penalities - particularly
  182. right now when there's a film deal (yet another) which has bought and paid
  183. for the right to use the material - which, I fear, e-mail users have not.
  184.  
  185. On CIS, I have asked people to limit Pern material to a discussion of
  186. their persona and dragons, fire-lizards, etc., in a diarist form.
  187. Fanzines have slightly more latitude as the zine is usually mailed only to
  188. members so that's limited publication, and a due copyright notice is
  189. included.  As there is no such protection on electronic mail, we authors
  190. have to be insistent on these safeguards.

  192. I know this can be confusing since Paramount and Star Trek are handled
  193. differently, but that's the point:  they are, and have been.  Individual
  194. themes and characters of s-f/fantasy novels are not.  And such
  195. indiscriminate usage of our characters, worlds, and concepts on a *public*
  196. media like electronic mail constitute copyright infringement AND, which
  197. many fans disregard, is ACTIONABLE!  Both the e-mail company AND the
  198. person.  My publishers are most insistent on that point!  So it's to
  199. safeguard the interested e-mail user that I make these very strong, and
  200. perhaps unpalatable points.

  268. (i.e. start with _Dragonflight_ and go in published order).

  271. to _Dragonflight_, _Dragonquest_, et. al.
